Dictionary of Computer Terminology (Arabic - English)


If we follow the most important contemporary technology of information technology by which the human crowned his civilization, we will find that the computer which is the fuel of information and its goal to develop knowledge guiding the individuals.

What is a computer? What are the stages of its development, and how much does it reflect on our contemporary life? What are its terms that represent the minimum framework of this science?The following quick presentation will briefly answer these questions in general.

What is the computer? .The computer is a machine that can solve problems quickly and easily. It has a memory that contains large amounts of information that are used in the next stages to solve the problems facing the human in a few seconds and give answers in numbers and words. The computer performs the tasks that are programmed to perform without fatigue or fatigue or exhaustion, nor does it make mistakes when it works. If we feed the computer with correct data, it will give correct answers. Its is very obedient, always ordered and it is classified into three main types according to size and operating range:
1 – Home computer and it is suitable for electronic games, education and simple programs.
2 - Office computer which is in the size of the typewriter and fit for the purposes of office and commercial and business management and some educational and scientific purposes.
3 - General computer used in institutions, organizations and large agencies for all practical and scientific complexed purposes.
The first and second types are called "microcomputer" or "personal computer" and can work on the regular television. The third type is either a "mini-computer" a medium-sized computer and it can be a large computer called a "main-frame-computer".

Computer generations?. Since the first modern computer was built in 1949, the world has witnessed a remarkable development in four major stages or generations.

The first generation of computers emerged in the early 1950s, with several companies in the United States and Europe producing computers for public use in industries and  government. However, the computer occupied a large area and depends on the manufacture of several thousand circuits and electric valves emitted heat lead to many faults when the computer were turned on.

The second generation of computer development was reached in the late fifties and early sixties, where the computer became medium size after the introduction of the transistor in the industry, which contributed to overcome the problem of heat and reduce the error rates and thus the reliance on computers increased in many different applications.

The development continued by replacing the very small integrated circuits called "chips" with the transistor, which led to the appearance  of the third-generation computer in the late 1960s, it was characterized by small size and low price.

And the great development that happened to the computer that it is used to serve the normal people after it was used in large businesses and is currently accessible to everyone, the child and the boy and young people and the elderly, at home and school and work and education and education. This evolution has shaped the fourth generation of large-scale integrated circuits for the computer.

And of the uses of computers that we may have heard about them and Arab citizen who deals with advanced technology and may concerns with include:
- Consult "information banks to identify all new knowledge, including goods by their specifications and prices, the nearest stores or suppliers, or recent publications and their extracts and places of publication ... And so on.
- Ordering purchases from stores directly after identifying the balance of their warehouses.
- Follow up schedules of flights and schedules.
- Automated booking in hotels, theatres, etc.
- Payment of bills of purchase or booking and balance of bank accounts.
- Learn foreign languages ​​and correct spelling mistakes and write letters and reports.
- Playing chess and entertainment games.
- Sending letters to distant places, etc.
The spread of the "information industry" has become closely linked to the development of the computer industry and these industries form the basis upon which the civilization of the last quarter of this century is built on.
