Understanding Morphology - Martin Haspelmath

What is morphology?. Morphology is the study of the internal structure of words. Somewhat paradoxically , morphology is both the oldest and one of the youngest subdisciplines of grammar. It is the oldest because , as far as we know , the first linguists were primarily morphologists .

The purposes of morphological research?. Morphological research aims to describe an explain the morphological patterns of human languages .It is useful to distinguish four more specific sub-goals of this endeavor : elegant description, cognitively realistic description , system-external explanation and a restrictive architecture for description .

This book provides an introduction to the field of linguistic morphology .It gives an overview of the basic notions and the most important theoretical issues, emphasizing throughout the diversity of morphological patterns in human languages . Readers who are primarily interested in understanding English morphology shouldn’t be deterred by this , however , because an individual language can be understood in much greater depth when viewed against the cross-linguistic background.

The focus of this book is on morphological phenomena and on broad issues that have occupied morphologists of various persuasions for a long time .No attempt is made to trace the history of linguists’ thinking about these issues , and references to the theoretical literature are mostly confined to the further reading sections . The author hasn’t adopted any particular theoretical framework , although I did have to opt for one particular descriptive format for morphological rules .

Readers should be warned that this format is no more standard than any this format , and not particularly widespread either . But the author has found it useful and the advanced student will soon realize how it can be translated into other formats .

In this edition of the book some new and expanded features were added like answers to each chapter’s comprehension exercises and can be found at the back of the book ,also the glossary has been enlarged. The exploratory exercises are larger in scope than the comprehension one .This book contains 12 main chapter with exercises to practice .Plus , the exercises guide readers through research questions in a open-ended way , asking them to gather and analyze date from a verity of sources , such as descriptive grammars , corpora, and native speaker consultants .

The exercises are broadly constructed so that they can be tailored to the needs and interests of particular individuals or groups .In a classroom setting , instructors can use them with different levels of students by adjusting their expectations regarding depth of analysis and methodological rigor .Finally, we wish the best for all of you.
